MAP: APEC 1996 vs 2015, in numbers

MANILA, Philippines – After hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) for the first time in 1996, the Philippines takes another shot at hosting the event 19 years after.

In 1996, APEC had only 18 member-economies. Back then, Chile was the youngest member, after joining APEC in 1994.

In 1998, 3 more countries were included – Peru, Russia, and Vietnam – which expanded the membership of APEC to 21 economies.

The Philippines is one of the 12 members that formed APEC in 1989.

What has changed among the APEC members since 1996? Rappler compared some indicators provided by the World Bank to show the differences between figures in 1996 and the latest statistics in the map below.

The darker the color of the country, the higher the value of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Click on colored areas of the map below to see figures and statistics.

Figures for Taiwan, however, are not available in the World Bank database.
